The “Cidade Jardins” City Tunnel in São Paulo

The “Cidade Jardins” (city tunnel) is one of the most discussed construction projects in São Paulo. Built under one of the most important streets in this metropolis, the tunnel is 2 x 0.6 km long and is designed to reduce the traffic on the “Avenida Brigadeiro Faria Lima”. For this city of 18 million residents the construction project is of major transportation and political importance, since the tunnel has been scheduled to be officially opened for use about 3 weeks prior to regional elections.

Securiton has been a member of the standards committee for traffic tunnels in Brazil for nearly two years and provides key competence gained from its many years of experience in Europe and the regulations and guidelines in effect there for traffic tunnels. Due to the numerous seminars and campaigns carried out by Securiton in the past, the Ansett Company (M&E contractor) asked Securiton to draw up a proposal for a system. The great challenge consisted of the short delivery and installation times required for the project. Securiton quickly came up with the solution: a SecuriSens TSC 515 linked to a SecuriPro and the entire installation managed from a control room. The SecuriPro also protects the premises to include the transformer stations. All of the cable installations were carried out overnight. Together with Securiton’s partner Paraná em Rede and with the cooperation of the project manager on site, Securiton was able to deliver, install and commission on schedule. Inaugurated on September 6th 2004, the tunnel is the first to be built in compliance with the new national standards.
