Traffic tunnel "Markusbierg" with exemplary fire protection concept

Tunnel accidents that cause fires are again making frightening headlines. The Markusbierg motorway tunnel in Luxembourg is a good example of how efficient measures can be implemented to prevent such catastrophes from happening. Opened a year ago, the tunnel has a sophisticated security concept based on a danger reporting system. Its alarm actuation and fire-fighting capability is unparalleled in Europe. The security technology is provided by Securiton GmbH; the Luxembourg system partner for implementation is Paul Wagner et Fils S.A.

Gaining precious time through continual temperature measuring

Motorway Tunnel Markusbierg in LuxembourgDuring the security planning stage, fire detection that is both rapid and precise was the central issue, which is why Securiton integrated the SecuriSens TSC 511 temperature sensor cable into both tubes of the 1,575-meter long Markusbierg tunnel. Due to its rapid and reliable detection, this linear heat detector with its highly dependable failure protection and its full-featured software meets the extremely strenuous requirements of Heat Detection Class A1-D in compliance with EN 54. Over 400 tunnel-kilometres throughout Europe have been made secure with this technology. SecuriSens TSC 511 is a robust flat cable with small, integrated heat detectors. Spaced every 7.2 meters through the tunnel, the sensors measure the temperature precisely and send the data to the evaluating processor unit. Whenever the specified temperature threshold value is exceeded, the event is reported to the fire detection control unit, which then immediately reacts by blocking the tunnel and activating smoke ventilation.

Exemplary security

After completion of the Markusbierg tunnel, the responsible authorities carried out an exhaustive functional test of the tunnel technology which included setting test fires. The TSC 511 sensor cable required not more than 21 seconds to detect the fires. Thanks to its efficient alarm management system and Securiton fire protection measures, the Markusbierg tunnel is considered to be one of the safest tunnels in Europe.
