Success in Greece

In August 2004 the Summer Olympic Games were held for the second time in Athens. Only very few cities have had this honour. The fact, that after 108 years the modern Olympic Games returned to their birthplace made the event even more significant. Thousands of athletes from all over the world competed in 28 different kinds of sports. In contrast to 108 years ago, the value placed on security for the athletes and spectators was now a prime issue. The security measures for large-scale sporting events such as the Olympics are becoming increasingly extensive and comprehensive.

Securiton is proud to be part of the security measures at the Olympics. In 2004 Securiton provided reliable stadium fire detection for two sport disciplines. With a seating capacity of 40,000, the Panthessaliko Stadium hosted football matches during the Olympics. After the Olympic Games the stadium became the sporting hallmark for Volos, a city which is about a four-hour drive from Athens. During the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games, Tennis competitions have been staged at the Olympic Tennis Center of the Athens Olympic Sports Complex (OAKA). Competition has taken place within the span of eight days (August 15-22). A total of ten courts have been used for the competition: the centre court (8,000 seats), court 1 (4,000 seats), court 2 (2,000 seats) and courts 3-9 (200 seats each). A total of 172 men and women athletes were scheduled to compete.

The rooms, plants and facilities in both stadiums are equipped with a SecuriPro fire detection system. SecuriStar detectors ensure rapid alarming at key strategic points in the event of fire and thus represent a vital link in the security chain of these stadiums. Planning, installation, commissioning and the on-schedule handover of the systems were carried out by Securiton partner Infocontrol.
