Fire Detection in Electrical Switchgear Installations Fires in high and low tension switchgear installations, transformer stations and substations hold great dangers. Apart from the in part catastrophic consequences of a power failure, highly toxic and ecologically harmful gases and waste products are caused by fires in transformers and insulating materials. Fires can break out in various ways: Overheating of parts of an installation, electric arcing during switching procedures and leak currents are possible fire risks due to operating. A further risk is provided by human beings themselves, e.g. welding works and cigarettes, etc. thrown away carelessly are the repeated cause of fire. The optical smoke detector is really the right detection principle in the field of electrical fire risks. However, application problems arise here for practical reasons: Because of safety clearances, no weak current systems may be installed in the high-voltage sector. So fire detectors cannot be mounted directly above the facilities to be monitored. For safety reasons, no scaffolding and ladders may be used for the periodical checks on functioning. Detectors have therefore to be mounted on a raisable base so that it will not be necessary to switch off the high voltage for functional checks. In the switchgear installation sector, massive EMV interference is to be expected through electrical arcing. As a result, fire detectors may be impaired in their operation. With the ASD aspiration smoke detection system The ASD smoke suction system is excellently suited for
fire detection in electrical switchgear installations, substations and
transformer stations:
