Cold does not protectagainst an outbreak of fire Even specialists never fail to be amazed of the gigantic scale which a fire in a cold-storage warehouse can achieve. Because low temperatures do not protect against an outbreak of fire, because there are numerous fire loads present. The pallets are made of wood, the insulating material is made of flammable plastic and the goods in store can also burn themselves. Frozen fire detectors In the case of conventional, point-topoint fire detectors, at temperatures of around minus 30° celsius and high wind speeds, ice crusts form preventing the entry of smoke into the detector if the detector is not heated. However, a cushion of warmth is formed by this detector heating which for its part hinders the spread of smoke from the fire to the detector. Operational checks on fire detectors in cold-storage warehouses are also very complicated and expensive as coldstorage warehouses are, as a rule, very high buildings. Smoke suction system RAS 52B The well-known advantages of smoke suction systems, such as best detection qualities and, in particular, the possibility of being able to carry out maintenance works and operational checks from ground level are decisive reasons why so many cold-storage warehouses are protected against fire by RAS. Especially as the procurement costs are comparable to those for conventional fire detectors. With the RAS 52B, Securiton has a smoke suction system in its programme which is specially designed to meet the needs of cold-storage warehouses. Heated suction apertures The suction apertures in a smoke suction system can also freeze under the mostextreme conditions in a cold-storage warehouse (especially in the vicinity of doors). However, thanks to the patented air current monitor of Securiton smoke suction systems, the heating of the suction apertures will only be switched on if a hole really is becoming frozen up, and will be switched off again when the quantity of air being sucked in attains normal values again. As a rule, it is only necessary to provide additional protection against icing up for those suction apertures in the vicinity of doors.
